what’s in a name?
We’re not quite sure when the word “melange” first appeared in our vocabulary. Quite frankly, we can’t recall ever using the word in a sentence let alone know how to pronounce it. mé·lange // māˈlänj
noun: mélange; plural noun: mélanges
a mixture; a medley “a mélange of vintage mirrors”
synonyms: mixture, medley, assortment, combination, blend, variety, mix, selection, potpourri, patchwork, bricolage; hash, mishmash, jumble, hodgepodge “a mélange of styles”
Why call it a mixture when it can be a melange? We must admit…”The French have a way of making simple words sound like romantic entreaties of love. Call any random assortment of things a melange, or as it’s sometimes spelled, mélange, and voila, you’ve given it a sparkle that plain old words like combination, mixture, and blend just cannot convey….” {from vocabulary.com}
